Project name: Scientific research project on writing Collective monograph about on environmental issues of Kazakhstan.

Project duration: 2019 - 2021

Project partners: The Project is implemented by the Kazakh-German University in a partnership with the Private Fund of Dossym Satpayev, with the support of the OSCE Centre in Nur-Sultan, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Kazakhstan, and the online eco-journal LivingAsia.

Project results: Collective monograph with participation of environmentalists, demographers, economists and political scientists from Central Asian countries, as well as international experts. The first book will be focused on environmental issues of Kazakhstan. Further on publication of similar books is being planned to be realized in all countries of Central Asia.

Project description: For a long period of time environmental issues in almost all countries of Central Asia were not prioritized in terms of ensuring national security, even despite the fact of Aral Sea environmental disaster. The reasons lie not only under a rather low level of environmental awareness, both among politicians and society, but also because environmental risks are traditionally not taken into account when analyzing possible political threats associated with increasing social tensions and the emergence of new protest groups. Basically, all these threats were tied either to a drop in the life standards in one country or another, or to the activity of internal and external opposition, or to the inefficient work of public structures, which provokes a crisis of trust to authorities.

Therefore one of the main project goals is to radically change the hierarchy of threats within the classical model framework of ensuring national security Central Asia as a whole, and Kazakhstan in particular, in order to show a direct as well as indirect connection between environmental threats and the risks of political and economic destabilization in the countries of the region.

One of the main project objectives along with the environmental threats identification is to provide recommendations to prevent or mitigate the consequences of those threats for the whole region. Indeed, it is a fact that if significant measures are not being taken now, then the consequences of current climatic changes may become catastrophic for a certain part of the population or lead to the extinction of some animals species in the nearest future. Hence, these recommendations and proposals should be directed not only to decision-makers at the highest level, but also to ordinary citizens and environmental NGOs. It is essential to urge all segments of society to fight against climate change, air and environmental pollution and to achieve decisive measures from high-level policy-makers.
