Student Contest IWRM in Afghanistan

 

On the 15th of May, 2017 was conducted the First National Student Contest "Integrated Water resources management" in Kabul Polytechnic University (KPU) in Afghanistan with an active participation of the UNESCO Chair on Water resources management in Central Asia at the German-Kazakh University and Hydraulic engineering and water resources Chair under KPU with the great support by - Professor. M. Nasim Nasimi.  The participants included Mr. Balakarzai the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, delegates from Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Water and Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNEP, World Bank and Prof. Kakar the Chancellor of Kabul Polytechnic University, Professors and students from different universities.

 

This year National Contest in Kabul was one of the most productive in Central Asia, it has opened the way for new water events to be organized in Afghanistan. Participated more than 30 people from the leading universities of Afghanistan. In the first stage students were proposed to be tested, the second stage is an oral interview among the winners of the first stage. The winner of the Contest in Kabul was Mr. Haroon Muhibi, student of the 4th course of the Pakita University, he showed high results, both in testing and in the oral part of the Contest.

 

In the framework of the Contest was hold scientific student workshop Water day, which interested participants with scientific projects of Ministry representatives by the Head of Transboundary water department under Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Hajib Fahim and by Senior Adviser of Ministry of Energy and Water Mr. Sharif Shobair.

 

Organizational support during the Contest, was presented by The World Bank Group, the UNEP on behalf of Mr. Salim Soltani, by the representative of the German Academic Exchange service in Kabul - Prof. Sardar Kohistani, by Vice-Minister in Academic Affair of Ministry of Higher Education, General Director of Water Regulation under Ministry of energy and water and General Director of Kabul River Basin - Mr. Abdul Masir.

 

According to the results of the IWRM Contest and Water day the active participants were awarded with certificates and prizes, as well as invited to participate in the Projects of the Natural resources Institute at German-Kazakh University. The winner of the contest will be invited to participate in the Regional stage of IWRM Contest and in the International Summer School "Methods and tools for assessing, modeling and monitoring of water and land resources in Central Asia", which will be scheduled from 5 to 18 June 2017 in Kazakhstan with the support of Regional research organizations "Central Asian Water" (CAWa).
